About Me

My photo
I have spent a great deal of my life battling illness. I suffered from Crohn's Disease and eventually had abdominal surgery, thwarting the Crohn's and budding cancer cells. Since my surgery in 1995 I have been relatively free from Crohns', although I had several subsequent surgeries related to my ileostomy..When my disease was in remission, I don't think my husband realized how bad it could get, but he has stood by me. I also have suffered from various autoimmune disorders and am diagnosed with Stage IV Kidney Disease. Fortunately, I am maintaining and do not need dialysis at this point. We adopted our son and later found out he had cerebral palsy, so he became my career. Dan has had two surgeries and tons of therapy and is able to walk because of it. He is a college graduate and is employed as an Information Specialist. We are very proud of his accomplishements. I am now part of the retired generation and still getting used to the idea. I do enjoy crafting, traveling and being with family and friends. I am active in my church and feel that the hardships we endure are there to build our faith. I like to live life in the "now" as we never know how much time is left.

More of This and That

Friday was fabulous as sister and I went to the Aquatic Park to sun ourselves and when we get too, too hot, to go on a tube down the lazy river!  The problem is you get on the same place where you get off, so getting off is not easy.  If you get stuck in the "traffic" of tubes going around again, then, there ya go.  I think I made three more extra spins around the lazy river than needed although it is refreshing...especially if the bucket of water overturn on you.  Sis had to ask a lifeguard to help her get off, especially since she has a sore shoulder.  The day of sun and fresh air did me in and bedtime came early

Yesterday was hubby's family reunion.  It wasn't as large as the last one.  Two of his second or third cousins are into geneology big time and have traced the family roots from Ireland to here.  We learned alot about DNA testing in geneology searches.  It was quite interesting.  Had a mixed bag of family from lawyers, bankers, wine growers and local farmers.  I helped with the silent auction with proceeds to go to a mission in Nicaragua where another relative is a nun.  Jim won a Waterford crystal clock for only $5.  I didn't win anything as most things went quite high.  He was just taken with the little clock.

Early to bed again!  Just so tired from the weekend's events.

Living Sideways!

I have been busy this week.  Working, meetings, and getting ready for our Red Hat Picnic.  This picnic includes all our chapters in our little city, so maybe 60 or so members show up for it.  I am in charge of centerpieces and name tags.  Now, does anyone know how to post a vertical picture so it isnt' sideways?
It is vertical in my photo program.....hmmm.

Tuesday morning we had our business meeting at work.  Wednesday night after working all day, I had a patient/caregiver advisory committee meeting.  It is in regards to our experience in the Emergency Department and how we can improve service.  It is completely voluntary, but they do feed us a good meal and will look good on my employee record.

Today I have off.  I am torn between going to the pool and just relaxing or running errands, doing laundry, etc.  The pool sounds nice!

Tomorrow I am helping my sister in law with a silent auction being held at my hubby's family reunion.  Hubby will come later to help.  It is a full day of eating, drinking, auction, music, comedy and fireworks.  I always like to see my sister in law, Earlene.  The rest is all gravy.

The Accident

It was stupid, careless, where was my brain?  I was thinking of going to the next rummage sale, when I backed up and "crunch."  I hit the car across the rear.  This was my first accident, so I was so glad to have my bff and sister along.  The lady whose car I hit was also with a friend.  The important thing....no one was hurt.  I was upset, very upset.  I would have to pay a $500 deductible.  Oh, let's add that to the money woes.  So, as I always do, I cried.  We cordially exchanged insurance information, addresses, I called my insurance company immediately and it will be taken care of.  The lady whose car I hit, gave me a HUG and so did her friend.  What some sweethearts.

After that I didn't want to drive, so bff did.  I did find a pair of yellow scrub pants, a pair of white jeans and a video for my godson.

When I told my hubby the news, he said "well, one accident in twenty some years isn't so bad, but you have to pay for it!"  I need a second job!

Last night I watched a show on the effects of cannabis on the brain and body.  We all have some of our own cannabis (without smoking).  I don't think I have enough!

Rainy Days and Money Woes

I have huge debts from my stupid teeth!  I had a crown, an extraction, and our dental insurance didn't cover very well.  Then, there is my credit card debt.  I want to cosolidate my debt and pay it off.  I am trying to figure out the best way to do this.  Let's see, quit shopping, quit gambling for sure...  I need to have some money for DC.  If anyone has any good pointers, please let me know.

I got in the middle of a family squabble.  Suffice it to say, my nephew won't speak to me regarding the subject and thus, won't speak to me at all.  Arghhhh!  I will just give it time and space.  It is more difficult for my bff who is his stepmom to give it time and space.  She is deeply hurt by this.

It is a rainy Saturday morning.  I don't know what is on the agenda for this weekend besides the usual laundry and cleaning (?).  There is a picnic going on today but not nice in the rain or with the mosquitos!

What are your plans?

Shopping Day!!!

Yesterday was shopping day!  First we went to Archivers.  http://www.archiversonline.com/stores/44  It is one humongous scrapbook store!  They didn't want me to take a picture and said people should just visit the website. We bought this pretty shimmery paper and some stickers for our trip to Washington DC in the Fall.

Next, we met for lunch at TGI Fridays. My bff, Linda, was meeting an old penpal who was visiting from out of state. We were delighted to meet her and her daughter Dena. What some nice ladies!

Colleen (sitting), myself, bff Linda, and Dena

We then went to Savers, a thrift store. I bought my son a shirt and a beaded watch for myself which needs a new battery. When we had scoped that store, we went to another thrift store which wasn't as nice. I did find a new shirt there and a book by Maeve Binchy! Actually bff found the book for me. It was a nice day...wish I would have had more time, more money, and more energy.

Shopping trip

The other day I had to run errands, get some gifts, etc.  I found an outfit for my great niece, a gift bag of baby products for the coworker who is having a baby soon.  Still looking for stuff for my Red Hat projects.

I went to Goodwill (thrift store) and found a Red Hat scarf and a paper punch for decorating cards...not sure how I'm going to use that yet.

Today I am going shopping with bff.  I'm so excited.  We will go to our favorite scrapbooking store as well as the thrift store.  Woo hoo!  Oh...almost forgot lunch.  We will be ladies who lunch as the purpose of our trip is to meet with one of her old penpals.

A New Perspective

Today I got a new perspective.  I discussed it with my supervisor as I would a friend.  My  recent disciplinary action doesn't define my work of the last eleven years and my job doesn't define who I am.  It is just a part of my life.

Disappointment and Growing Older

Three years ago I was diagnosed with kidney disease. It caused a severe depression which affected my work performance. I was cut a day and lost my benefits.  It could not be proved that it was my depression that was the cause of my losing my day, but do the math.

I have wanted a job in Pediatrics for over three years.  They made the position full time which was too much with my health conditions.  Then, the full time girl went on to a different position.  The clinic wasn't sure if they were going to post the position or what.  Well, they approved of twenty hours a week there and posted it on Friday and it was filled by Monday by the gal in registration.  Sounds like an inside job.  So, yesterday that dream of ever being part time and having benefits again died.  On top of that, I got reamed out for asking questions about the position being filled (my supervisor wasn't there to ask).

I came home from work and cried for an hour.  I am 59.  There aren't any other opportunities for me.  This is it...the pinnacle of my career at the clinic.  My son tried to assure me that I was a success as he turned out good.  He did.   Growing older is not what it's cracked up to be.  I am stuck in my rut until they either let me go or I retire.  I can't afford either. I don't know what to do.

Plan B; New addiction?

Yesterday I had to reschedule my stress test.  I forgot, and had caffeine.  Do you think it was a subconscious action on my part?  I was dreading the test and now it is put off for two weeks.

So, Plan B:  My bff said, "Go to the stamp along with me."  I did, and created the following cards.  Some are seen on bff's blog, http://lindaloveschocolate.blogspot.com/

I Need a New Habit

I started my day well.  I had a fabulous outfit on for church.  Since I had no one to take my pic, I will describe it here:  Black and silver blouse, black capris, wedge sandals, black malachite bracelet, pendant on a black cord.  Even though it was mostly black, it was really quite chic.... I looked great and felt great in it.

The weekend has been boring.  Saturday was a graduation party for a neighbor, but other than our neighbors, we didn't know anyone.  The weather was kind of dismal also.  Went to bed early Saturday night.

Went to church yesterday morning in my fabulous outfit.  Againd, boredome set in.  I also had a craving for a good burger.  So we went on a road trip for a burger.

I wanted to go to the casino.  It is a sickness...I know.  I got my way and we all lost.  I cannot afford it and will probably have to take out a loan to go to Washington DC in Fall.  I am keeping track of my losses to somehow drum it into my head that it is a losing proposition.  I think of all that I could have done with the money instead of squandering it in the casino.  Enough said.  I will overcome this addiction too!  Maybe I should get addicted to exercise?

Today I have to have a dobutamine stress test....ick!  They give me this stuff that makes my heart feel like it will explode and do an ultrasound at the same time.  I hate the feeling of my heart pounding so hard.  It is scary.  Nothing is wrong, but I need to have it as a screening for my transplant doctor in case they ever want to give me a kidney.

A busy summer!

Last Saturday we went to the most fantastic birthday party for a one year old.  Really it was an excuse for a family reunion.  The birthday boy was Jim's great nephew. The nieces and nephews have moved all over the country and were all home so a great time for a party and to see everyone.   The party had a circus theme.  There were cute centerpieces, circus themed cake, drink dispenser, playthings for the kids, you name it.  Birthday boy will not even remember it but his older sisters might.

We had a good time!
Sunday was my great nephew, Travis'  graduation from high school.party.  He is going into the National Guard this week.  He is a good kid.  The party was nice but there were some tense moments as the party was shared between Trav' grandma, dad and mom.  Dad and mom are divorced....hence, the tension.  The mom is on her own for the next son after this experience.  Dad will have his own party for son number two.
The moral of the story.  If there are bad feelings between exes, don't bother trying to work with them!

Do you think we look like sisters?...LOL!
Went to the Fireworks for the 4th of July.  In the words of my great niece: "Wow, wow, wow, wow!"  She will be three next month and is a human tornado!  She is a sweet, lovable little girl though!

My hubby and I went to Summerfest on Wednesday.  It is a music festival, mostly for young people but a few of us oldies but goodies attend.  Jim's favorite band, Tonic, was playing.  They have had several grammy nominated songs.

There are all types of people at Summerfest! It is fun to just people watch.   The best part was hubby holding my hand all night.  It was a rare treat for just the two of us to go away for a night.

Today is another graduation party; this time for our neighbor's daughter.  Summer is a busy time.

I am in a accessory swap hosted by Pam in http://over50feeling40.blogspot.com/  Check out her blog!

It was a Wierd Friday!

It was a wierd Friday.  Taking my mom for her manicure means so much more than that.  She decided she needed new sandals.  This is difficult for a 92 year old without toenails.  We went to Shopko, then, Kohls, then Walmart where she found some, but they don't cover her toes, but she liked them and they were only $7.  She needed some other things as well.  I am happy to say that in the midst of the sandal quest, I did get my gift bag and some cleaner.

I took my son to a local bar cause they have good food and wanted to try their fish fry. (that's what we call it in Wisconsin).  We sat in the back.  Well, low and behold, they have machines similar to slots with all the bells and whistles, but you play for credits (which turn into money from the bar).  The noise was beckoning us to go to the casino, but we resisted.  Good thing I don't like driving at night!

I watched some TV, did some laundry, and went to bed.  Let the wierd dreams begin!  I woke up at 5am in tears from a horrible nightmare that was so vivid.  My coworker had betrayed me and I was losing my job cause she set me up.  I decided to stay up, cause sometimes these dreams continue after I go back to bed.

Glad I am going to a birthday party today.  Happier times are ahead!

Summer is Here!

Summer is here!  It is only 6:30am and it is 77°F!  That's fine with me.  My house has AC and my car does too (so far).

Today I am taking my mom to get her nails done.  She has a gift certificate, so she can get them done at least twice!  I will be like my mom (I already am).  She is almost 92 and still cares about her appearance.  She is one sharp cookie!  It is so much better spending time with her now that she has hearing aides in both ears!

I want to go to the Dollar Store and maybe Sally's Beauty Supply.

I need to iron some shirts and my sundress.  Leave it to me to pick the hottest day in the year, but I have AC!  God loves me.
