About Me

My photo
I have spent a great deal of my life battling illness. I suffered from Crohn's Disease and eventually had abdominal surgery, thwarting the Crohn's and budding cancer cells. Since my surgery in 1995 I have been relatively free from Crohns', although I had several subsequent surgeries related to my ileostomy..When my disease was in remission, I don't think my husband realized how bad it could get, but he has stood by me. I also have suffered from various autoimmune disorders and am diagnosed with Stage IV Kidney Disease. Fortunately, I am maintaining and do not need dialysis at this point. We adopted our son and later found out he had cerebral palsy, so he became my career. Dan has had two surgeries and tons of therapy and is able to walk because of it. He is a college graduate and is employed as an Information Specialist. We are very proud of his accomplishements. I am now part of the retired generation and still getting used to the idea. I do enjoy crafting, traveling and being with family and friends. I am active in my church and feel that the hardships we endure are there to build our faith. I like to live life in the "now" as we never know how much time is left.

I Love Camping!

When we got to Calument County Campground, someone was on our site and didn't have to move till 5pm.  Since we didn't want to miss going out for fish with the group or set up in the dark, we took a different site.
This was the view we should have had.  We enjoyed it at our fellow camper friend's.
This is the view we got:
The weekend was celebrating a 60th birthday (a mere babe).

I enjoyed taking pictures of the day.

The "Creature"
"Don't climb on that log, cause I'm not going to help you down!"

I love jungle gyms.  We didn't have them in my day.

"So, who's stopping me now?"

I started Weight Watchers again.  Seems like the safest way to get healthy and lose weight.
I liked the morning meeting as it was mostly middle age women like myself.  Now, if I could just
motivate myself to walk or bike!  I am not big on exercise, but will have to learn to love it.
This weekend when I go camping, I will go for walks.  I just enjoy it so much more when I have someone to walk WITH.  Everyone is so busy these days, too busy to walk.

Bad News but Not the End of the World

What does Kidney Disease look like?  What are the symptoms?  I am not sure.
All I know is that I am Stage IV again and my blood work is the worst it has ever been.
So, what does this mean for me?  I'm a bit scared (I don't want to be headed for dialysis).
In two weeks I have my blood drawn again and we'll see if there are any changes and what happens next.
I am getting a nasty cold, but that won't keep me down!  I am going camping this weekend with my sis.

The Circle of Life!

Saturday was Ethnic Fest.  I forgot my camera and thought I would use my phone, but with the sun I couldn't see what I was doing!  Please read about it here Ethnic Fest.  My bff, Linda, took some pics.
I was good; I didn't buy anything nor did I eat the banana crepe!
Sunday was Mom's 94th birthday!  We went out as a family so Mom could have her traditional lobster dinner!  The 5 year old is quite rambunctious and wore on Mom's nerves, but we all survived her abundant energy (is that nicely put?).
okay, tilt your head!

Oops! Almost forgot to take a picture.  My niece made this cake.

My sister reading Mom's cards to her!

Our son with his Grams!
Sunday was also the due date for my great, great nephew and his fiancĂ©!  (that's how it's going these days).  Well, they made it till 2am on Monday and Nicole was in labor till 12:46.  She gave birth to a 8lb 15oz, 23" long baby boy!
Thomas Lee

Proud Daddy! He stayed so calm during the whole ordeal.

My sister, the great grandma!
Pass the baby!  I love this little guy already!
My nephew and fiancé, proud grandparents.

Thanks, Honey, you did good!

Progress and Update

Yesterday I trained at the Senior Center again.  I found out I am just going to be a fill-in.  That is too bad as I would love to do more.  Think I will hit up the Historical Society to do volunteer work.
I have lost a two pounds, more, if I count my unofficial weight before I started tracking.  I think it is because I have quit cookies and cut down (almost entirely) on baked goods and candy.  I am still taking my pure garcina cambogia but probably won't buy more.
Today I am doing my mom's nails:  trim, file and polish.  Sunday is her 94th birthday.  If she feels well enough, we will take her out for lobster and then all come here for cake.  She has been feeling sickly lately...one thing after another.  Her vision is going too and she is depressed.  Two of the ladies she knew at the Home have died and they were younger than her.  She told my sister she thinks this will be her last birthday.  God only knows, but I pray what is best for Mom.
Tomorrow I am going with my bff to learn more about the Cameo Silhouette.  I don't know that I will buy one or even ask for it for Christmas.  It is expensive.  Will I get enough use out of it?
Saturday is Ethnic Fest, tent shops on the street, music, food!  It is supposed to be cool but sunny.
I will try and take pictures.
Have a great week!

Good Week!

This was a good week.  Got a fabulous deal from freecycle.com!  Someone was giving up their scrapbook.  Well, it included a hinged box, and many layouts. She had removed her pictures, but the layouts and ideas are just great!  I can either reuse them, or just keep them for ideas.

Yesterday my bff and I went to Goodwill, some craft stores and visited my mom and later went out for fish!
We discovered  this neat little shop in town that has gifts made in South Africa and goes to benefit children there.  The items are quite reasonably priced too!  I got this little headband for our "at home"
Red Hat get together.

I have two training sessions scheduled at the Senior Center next week.  I also have to do my Mom's nails as her birthday is a week from Sunday.  Have a class on Friday to learn more about the
Cameo Silhouette.

A Few Thrifty finds and an Update

This is Day #3 without cookies.  That is a big thing for me as I can and do eat them like popcorn or potato chips!  Last night I did need something sweet and couldn't resist some ice cream with my hubby with caramel and fudge topping.  That is not something I do all the time.
I am taking Pure Garcina Cambogia, some type of herbal weight loss thing.  So far, I haven't seen any results.  It is probably not the smartest thing for me to do what with my kidney disease and all, but I am so desperate to lose some weight!
Sunday I went with my sister to my nephew's house.  There was a house full watching the football game.  Their littlest one was Carson, 10 months old and so fun to watch!
I have been thrift shopping of late.  I found my son two dress shirts in a small, which is hard to find!  They are like new and he likes them too!  I also got these cute shoes, which I can't wear right now, cause my big toe has an ugly nail fungus.  I am debating laser treatment as I can only treat it topically (cause of the kidneys) and will have to wait for 6 months for the darn thing to grow out!
I forgot to straighten the bows out before taking this pic.  They are brand new and cost me $6.  I also bought a duster/bathrobe which I will need with the cooler weather.  It is difficult to think of the weather getting cool when it was over 90° yesterday!
So that is all that is new for me this week.....so far!

Shopping and other Thoughts

Allergies are a bit more under control....ahchoo!
I enjoyed my first day of training at the Senior Center for receptionist.  It is more involved than one would think.  I like their computer system.  They have to keep tabs of EVERYTHING so as to justify having the center, and to get federal or state funding.
Yesterday I went with a friend as she needed to have a procedure and wouldn't be able to drive home.  Well, we made it into a fun day!  After her procedure we went to Applebees for lunch.
After that, I drove to to my favorite store:  Christopher & Banks.  They have clothing designed for women over 40.  Not matronly, mind you, but at least it is fashionable without looking too young!
Summer clothes was on sale and I found two tops at 50% off and a new fall sweater on sale.  It was nice to buy something that is not from the thrift store but is all mine!

Did you ever have feelings that your life didn't turn out the way you wanted?  I have had these feelings since another friend got her Medical Assistant Diploma.  I have the same, but I did not get a job assisting the doctor, but ended up in medical office work.  She got a job in orthopedics.  I am a bit envious of her.  I argue with myself that I am older and that when I graduated it was a different time and medical assistants weren't that much in demand.  Also, I have to remember that God has put me where he wants me for a purpose and He knows it better than I.  Even when I had my stressful job, God had a plan for me.  I just don't know what it is yet!

Labor Day Weekend and Allergies

How was your weekend?  Mine was full....well, kind of.
Started out well with camping on Friday and going out for a Friday Fish Fry!
This is part of the camping gang:

I went home on Saturday to meet up with my hubby.  Stayed home during the day to do laundry and rest.  Had to leave the campground early due to a personal "accident" with my ostomy bag.  This heat and humidity has not been good for it.
We met up with the gang for Kites Over Lake Michigan, an annual event held every Labor Day weekend.  Waiting for the festivities to resume, I people watched and enjoyed the scenery.
We watched in awe as they released the lighted lanterns into the sky in memory of a loved one.
I tried to take a picture, but on my camera they just appeared as stars in the sky.  You really had to be there to see them!
Fireworks later!  After, we went to the campground to sit around the fire.
Sunday I had wanted to go back to see the Kites, and missed it due to severe allergies.  No matter what I took, I kept sneezing and blowing my nose.  The  pills the pharmacist recommended made me feel worse, so I stayed home, blew my nose, did laundry, and slept!
This is what I missed on Sunday.  I saw it last year and will be sure to attend next year and hopefully not be bothered so much by allergies.
