About Me

My photo
I have spent a great deal of my life battling illness. I suffered from Crohn's Disease and eventually had abdominal surgery, thwarting the Crohn's and budding cancer cells. Since my surgery in 1995 I have been relatively free from Crohns', although I had several subsequent surgeries related to my ileostomy..When my disease was in remission, I don't think my husband realized how bad it could get, but he has stood by me. I also have suffered from various autoimmune disorders and am diagnosed with Stage IV Kidney Disease. Fortunately, I am maintaining and do not need dialysis at this point. We adopted our son and later found out he had cerebral palsy, so he became my career. Dan has had two surgeries and tons of therapy and is able to walk because of it. He is a college graduate and is employed as an Information Specialist. We are very proud of his accomplishements. I am now part of the retired generation and still getting used to the idea. I do enjoy crafting, traveling and being with family and friends. I am active in my church and feel that the hardships we endure are there to build our faith. I like to live life in the "now" as we never know how much time is left.

Fun times and the "S" Word

Since the last time I posted anything of substance, I have some new news.

One Friday night my sister and I went to the Senior Center's big fund raiser, Legends of Country.
The Legends band is very good.  This time they presented "Alan Jackson," "George Strait," and "Brooks and Dunne."  Besides being good singers, they do a really good job of impersonating these singers.

It is difficult to take a good picture in the dark with my phone!

There was a 50/50 raffle, and my sister won!  $225!!!

Last week Friday, my husband, son, sister and myself went to a Fish Boil.  (No, I did not take a picture of my food!)

There were raffle tickets there too.  My husband didn't win any beer, or a turkey fryer, but as we were leaving we bought tickets for Pink Heals (cancer support).  We both got calls this week.  I won
1/2 pig after processing, and he won a basket of assorted things, including gloves, a tee shirt, hoodie
jack knives, cards and can cozies.  We are a lucky family lately!

I have been having chronic migraines.  Sometimes I have one every day for a week, and then I might go for quite a while without one.  I am keeping a diary of all my ailments.  How fun.  (NOT!)
I have not have a migraine since Sunday, and that was a tiny one.

This weekend we get our family portrait taken for the church directory.  Hope we look okay!   Our church got a discount for doing it during Holy Week.  We don't have any great plans for Easter.
We are just going to grill some steaks if the snow melts.

Speaking of the "S" word.... I was taking my son to work.  Since last night we got the heavy stuff, then it was raining/sleeting and then snowing again!  The poor robins must be so confused!

Just a Word

I'm sorry, I haven't felt like writing or reading blogs.

I'm still around and will return.

Another Week Closer to Spring?

The good news is that I have been relatively "healthy."  Other than a few ostomy blow-outs (ostomy leak)  and a couple of migraines, I'm good.

Last Thursday I volunteered at the senior center as I do every month.  Saturday night my husband took me and our son out.  We went to Firehouse Subs.  It is really good, and our son had not been there before.  It was our second choice, as our favorite burger place, Basils II, was having a birthday party and there was no place to sit!  Anyway, we enjoyed our subs and will go back.

We then went to the casino, which we hadn't done in a long time.  I went in with $20 and went through that rather quickly.  My husband and son were both on winning streaks, so they gave me money to play some more. Won some, lost some, but had fun, and they both still came out ahead.
We were home by 9:30.
I had a massive headache on Sunday (probably from all the cigarette smoke).

I have been trying my hand at Bible Journaling.  I belong to a couple of Facebook groups on the subject.

It is difficult to draw or color in a Bible for me, but this isn't my study Bible.  In fact the font is too small for me to read comfortably.

       Psa 73:23

Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
you hold my right hand.

       Psa 73:24
You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will receive me to glory.
                Psa 73:25
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
             Psa 73:26
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
             Psa 73:27
For behold, those who are far from you shall perish;
you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.

       Psa 73:28
But for me it is good to be near God;
I have made the Lord GOD my refuge,
that I may tell of all your works.

This verse has jumped out at me as I have felt so helpless in my friend's struggle with cancer.

She has been quiet.  She feels so empty.  She doesn't feel like writing, reading visiting or anything.
Well, yesterday we had a visit and it was good.  She knows she can be herself with me and share her fears and whatever else is on her mind.  I brought her some pineapple and some yellow tulips.  I am hoping it warms up soon, that the snow would melt on her deck and she can sit outside and feel the sun on her!

I had Red Hat last night. I updated our group on bff's condition.  It wasn't easy and when I sat back down, I cried.  Everyone was busy gabbing so the only one who noticed, was the lady on the right of me.  People just don't, and never will realize how difficult it is to be the bearer of bad news, especially when it is about someone who is like a sister to you!

We had an Irish theme for our dinner at an Italian restaurant.  I had seafood linguini with garlic and oil.  Poor choice as it went right through me, and suffice it to say, I did not make it to the bathroom in time.  (note to self:  never box yourself in at a restaurant again!)  I won the Trivia contest, and for the most part, had a good time.

Action!

I had done some research, and even reached out to my nephew in Pennsylvania, for advice.

I wanted my bff to get another "expert" opinion at the Carbone Cancer Center at the University of Wisconsin, but it was not to be.  She got so sick on the way, they turned around and she went to our local cancer center and got an IV.

The next day we went to see her oncologist.  I really don't doubt his ability, but just want the best for my friend.  Listening to him and Linda talk, brought me out of my nightmare and into reality.

I don't like this.

I spoke to the nurse after.  (my friend was getting something done and was going to go home with her husband).

I cried.  I told the nurse how I have been through loss before.  I told her I was afraid and just want what's best for my friend.  I am still coming to terms with this.

Today, I took her to the hospital where she had same day surgery to get her port.  Through that she will get her chemo.  My sister also came up to the hospital, to see Linda, and to sit with me.

Linda is in fighting mode now.  I think it is a great relief that the waiting is over, and now she can take action.
